Brass Coat hooks about 100 of them all the same,

thats amazing for us!

Door knobs, some with shaft, some with grub screw,

they also make great coat, hat and towel knobs.

Brass door fittings, knobs and back plates,

some with a key hole and some without!

steel butterfly hinges for anything i guess...

meat safes, kitchen dressers, doors....whatever

back plates for doors, now there are bakelite, brass,

steel, rounded, bevelled, plain, oval, painted ........

not many pairs if any, they are individual

Timber butter boxes, about 10 years or so

off becoming 'Antique' I believe,

though there are some tools there that qualify.

This 'Orchid' tree is beautiful in bloom and it blooms for several months,

growing about 20-40 ft tall and 10-20 ft wide with a spreading crown of briefly deciduous leaves which are about 4-6 inches across, rounded with lobed ends and heart shaped bases.

our palm trees have a lot less foliage,

looking for someone to jump on the other end of that cross cut saw
then the dropped palm tree leaves would be a thing of the past!

The Legend of the Willow Pattern

There was once a Mandarin who had a beautiful daughter, Koong-se.

He employed a secretary, Chang who,

while he was attending to his master's accounts,

fell in love with Koong-se, much to the anger of the Mandarin,

who regarded the secretary as unworthy of his daughter.

The secretary was banished and a fence constructed
around the gardens of the Mandarin's estate
so that Chang could not see his daughter
and Koong-se could only walk in the gardens and to the water's edge.

One day a shell fitted with sails containing a poem,
and a bead which Koong-se had given to Chang,
floated to the water's edge.
Koong-se knew that her lover was not far away.

She was soon dismayed to learn
that she had been betrothed to Ta-jin,
a noble warrior Duke.
She was full of despair when it was announced
that her future husband, the noble Duke,
was arriving, bearing a gift of jewels to celebrate his betrothal.

However,
after the banquet, borrowing the robes of a servant,
Chang passed through the guests unseen and came to Koong-se's room.
They embraced and vowed to run away together.

The Mandarin, the Duke, the guests,
and all the servants had drunk so much wine
that the couple almost got away without detection,
but Koong-se's father saw her at the last minute
and gave chase across the bridge.

The couple escaped and stayed with the maid
whom Koong-se's father had dismissed for conspiring with the lovers.
Koong-se had given the casket of jewels to Chang and the Mandarin,
who was also a magistrate,
swore that he would use the jewels
as a pretext to execute Chang when he caught him.

One night the Mandarin's spies
reported that a man was hiding in a house by the river
and the Mandarin's guards raided the house,
but......
Chang had jumped into the ragging torrent
and Koong-se thought that he had drowned.

Some days later the guards returned to search the house again.
While Koong-se's maid talked to them,
Chang came by boat to the window and took Koong-se away to safety.

They settled on a distant island,
over the years Chang became famous for his writings
.
This was to prove his undoing.

The Mandarin heard about Chang and sent guards to destroy him.
Chang was put to the sword and
Koong-se set fire to the house while she was still inside.

Thus they both perished and the gods, touched by their love,

immortalised them as two doves, eternally flying together in the sky.

Octavin - our mystery musical instrument

Our Octavin is missing its bell.

We finally found educatus.com and this is what they say:

The octavin is a perculiar oddity among the single-reed family, and was invented

- apparently in vain - by Jehring and Adler or Markneukirchen in 1894.

The instrument in the photograph is made of rosewood

and has a conical bore in one butt,

with a plated metal bell pointing forwards,

and an ebonite barrel and mouthpiece.

Little is known of this instrument,

as it was never taken up seriously by band or orchestra.

The octavin is a woodwind instrument with a conical bore and a single reed.

As such it resembles a saxophone, and its range is similar to that of a soprano saxophone,

but the octavin differs in three respects:

first, its conical bore has a smaller taper than that of a saxophone;

second, its body is made of wood, rather than metal;

third, its usual shape is similar to that of a bassoon,

having two parallel straight sections joined at the bottom,

with the mouthpiece attached to the top of one section

and a metal bell to the top of the other.

(A few straight octavins exist, having a wooden bell;

in this configuration it resembles a tarogato but has a smaller taper.)

The instrument was produced in B♭ and C.

One writer (Altenberg) mentions a bass octavin

but no such instrument is known to have been produced.

The (written) range of the octavin is from G♯₃ to G₆.

While invention of the octavin around 1893

is sometimes attributed to Julius Jehring,

Oskar Adler and Hermann Jordan of Markneukirchen patented it.

The octavin never caught on and is an

extremely rare instrument, though the

American composer Jeff Britting (b. 1957)

has composed a sonatina for octavin.

Holiday road trip to sydney

A couple of weeks on the road visiting some of our beautiful children in Glebe and Redfern,

friends at Maitland in the Hunter Valley and family in Quirindi on the Liverpool Plains.

A night spent altogether at the YHA in Sydney Central, was a treat and extremely good value, 4 bed room with ensuite for under $200 and this roof top view was just fantastic.

We watched bikes racing across the Sydney Harbour Bridge competing in the Sydney Triathalon as we enjoyed our morning coffee from the YHA coffee shop...awesome!

Comming back via the New England Highway,

(a drive so much easier and more relaxing than the Pacific Highway and just as quick!)

I journeyed through Armidale, the autumn colours are spectacular.

I have tried to get the almost louminous shades of red in contrast to the earthy tones but I simply don't have the skill to capture what I see.

A spice tin that still has so many uses today.

This we believe is one of our most unusual pieces,

it is an antique steam indicator, used to measure the preassure of steam,

I am not sure this sextant will get you where you want to go but it is a very old and interesting piece.

My dad was a bus condutor fom the 1950s through to the 1980s

in the Hunter Valley so this coin tray brings back many memories.

With TVs being so slim line these days I really like this chair idea and antique tongue and groove shelving.

A collection of nautical treasures - lures, creels, life saver bouys

My first Saturday morning back after a few weeks off on a road trip to Melbourne was spent fossicking through our shop looking for a selection of nautical treasures to go with these two rather old timber lures.

The South Steyne Life Bouy is an original
from when the ferry was refurbished at the Ballina Slipways. The following is a small part of the information available by clicking on the link:
The South Steyne is perhaps the most famous of the Manly Ferries. The ship was the only ferry licenced to sail outside the Heads and from 1953 until 1973 made regular trips to Broken Bay each Sunday giving many Sydneysiders their first experience of an ocean cruise.

Her career finished on August 25th, 1974 when she caught fire at her Balmain berth and was withdrawn from service as a commuter ferry. Restoration work commenced in 1987 at Ballina in New South Wales and later in Melbourne.

Melbourne is an amazing city, watching the finals of the tennis at "Fed Square" with my son was so much fun, such a shame more cities do not have this type of community place.

I must admit I was reluctant to do a hook turn in our super long wheel base hiace van, but I did and all was good!

Back from my travels to Montvillevia Mount Tambourine and Murwillumbah

It has been a couple of weeks since our last update, and we have been exploring our beautiful region and beyond.

We escaped north for a few days
and here are a couple of features of our trip.

The Red Rattler Gallery at 385 Tomewin Rd, Murwillumbah, NSW 2484

A beaut place to meet for a unique experience in todays times.

Enjoy coffee, morning or afternoon tea,
delicious home made cakes and goodies set within two 1928 restored Rattlers..

What a treat!

The memories came flooding back

of riding similar rattlers from Maitland to Newcastle in my youth,

for a day at the beach in the 1970s, I felt like I was there again.

The Red Rattler Gallery is owned by the delightful Fi.

Fi offers amazing artworks,

pottery and jewellery for sale

along with other gifts, mostly by local and talented artisians.

Next Stop Mt. Tambourine..of course!!

We found this newly established Antique Shop at the begining of Gallery Walk

and look at these lead soldiers.

Then up to discover Montville in Queenslands Sunshine Coast Hinterland.
